Colorado Real Estate License Reciprocity

How to transfer your real estate license from another state to Colorado.

What is real estate license reciprocity?   One may obtain a real estate license by reciprocity or mutual recognition if the person has a current license in another state.  It basically means you would transfer your license without having to take some or all of the state’s pre-licensing requirements.  Requirements for an of-state-real estate license vary by state.

Does Colorado have real estate reciprocity with other states?

Yes.  Colorado has two levels of reciprocity with other states.

If you have a current (non-expired) real estate license in another state for at least two (2) years, you will only need to pass the state portion of the Colorado Real Estate Broker’s Exam.  You will not need to take a pre-license course. To study for the state portion of the exam, you may take an exam prep course.

If you have a current (non-expired) real estate license in another state for less than two (2) years, you will need to take a minimum of 120 hours of approved educational courses prior to take the Colorado Real Estate Broker’s Exam.

Note regarding number of hours:
The standard pre-license course is a total of 168 hours.   It consists of these separate courses.  The 120 hours is Colorado specific and the 48 Law and Practice Course is general (national).  You should inquire about the possibility of taking all courses except the 48 hour Law and Practice Course.  Here are the courses.

Online courses equaling 168 hours shows the state portions of 120 hours and the Law and Practice portion of 48 hours that should not be required.

  • 48 hours, Colorado Contracts & Regulations
  • 8 hours, Trust Accounts & Recordkeeping
  • 8 hours, Current Legal Issues
  • 24 hours, Real Estate Closings
  • 32 hours, Practical Applications
  • 48-Hour Law and Practice Course (NOT required for reciprocity for those with non-expired license less than two years)

Contact the school when registering for the course about that course and your need for the 120 hours.  Of course, you may also simply take the entire 168 package of courses.
