How do I get a real estate license in my state? All states require you to pass a real estate pre-license education course and a state exam. The exam covers both national and state real estate requlgations.
Do I need to take the exam prep options with a pre-license course? No. But many prefer to have the extra help and practice exams to help pass the real estate exam.
Can you work on your own? No. An agent must start working under the supervision of a broker. Official names of “agents” and supervising brokers vary by state. To work on your own or manage a company, you normally need a 2 or 3 years licensed as an agent.
Will a license in one state apply to other states? No. A real estate license applies to the state where you obtain your license. However, you may obtain a license with less or no education requirements in many other states based on reciprocity or similar license recognition.
Do I need to take continuing education after getting a license? Yes. Most states require continuing education courses every 2 years or so. Some also require a one-time “post license” requirement.
What are the other real estate requuirements after getting a license? If you plan to list homes or show properties, you will need to become a member of the local and national Assocation of Realtors. If not, you can only be a licensed as a referral agent but cannot list or show homes.
