Iowa Real Estate License Reciprocity

How to transfer your real estate license from another state to Iowa .

What is real estate license reciprocity?   One may obtain a real estate license by reciprocity or mutual recognition if the person has a current license in another state.  It basically means you would transfer your license without having to take some or all of the state’s pre-licensing requirements.  Requirements for an of-state-real estate license vary by state.

Does Iowa have real estate reciprocity with other states?

Yes.  Iowa has real estate reciprocity with seven (7) other states.   Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.  Your out-of-state license must be current.

If you have a license in any other state, Iowa provides mutual recognition so that you would not have to take a pre-license course or the national portion of the exam. You would only have to take the Iowa portion of the real estate exam.  Exam prep for the Iowa portion of the real estate exam is available in an online format.

Requirements and steps to get a real estate license by reciprocity in Iowa:

  • You have a current real estate license in AR, GA, LA, MA, MN, MS, or ND.
  • You are a resident of AR, GA, LA, MA, MN, MS, or ND.
  • You received your original license from one of the reciprocal states.
  • You will have their Iowa license assigned to the same real estate company that holds that license.
  • Request a certificate of license history (letter of good standing) from your reciprocal state to be sent to you.  This document must also include the method of licensure (exam, reciprocity, other, etc.) and what real estate company holds your license.
  • Submit to a state and national criminal history background check through the Iowa Real Estate Commission.
  • Apply for your Iowa broker license
  • Attached to your application the original certificate of license history and  proof of errors and omissions insurance coverage in Iowa.
