Hawaii Real Estate License Reciprocity

How to transfer your real estate license from another state to Hawaii .

What is real estate license reciprocity?   One may obtain a real estate license by reciprocity or mutual recognition if the person has a current license in another state.  It basically means you would transfer your license without having to take some or all of the state’s pre-licensing requirements.  Requirements for an of-state-real estate license vary by state.

Does Hawaii have real estate reciprocity with other states?

Technically, not reciprocity with other states.  However, persons with an out-of-state license may be eligible to take only the Hawaii state portion of the real estate exam without taking a pre-license course or the National portion of the exam.  Hawaii accepts an out of state licence by “equivalency”.  The license must be current and active in another state.  You must have obtained your license by passing an examination in the original state.  Your license must be currently in good standing.

Requirements to get a real estate license by reciprocity in Hawaii :

  • You have a current and active real estate license, in another state.
  • You took the required pre-license work and passed the real estate exam (national and state portions) in the other state.
  • You provide a certificate of licensure (full license history).
  • Standard criminal background check
  • You do not need to take the pre-license course or the national portion of the Hawaii real estate exam.
  • After passing the Hawaii portion of the real estate exam by PSI, you may apply for your real estate license using the forms on the official Hawaii Real Estate Branch website.  This includes the 1) Application for Prelicensing Education Equivalency, 2) Application for Equivalency to the Uniform Section of the Examinatio and 3) Verification of License.
